Surrey, BC- The Surrey Police Service is investigating an early morning shooting at a residence in Surrey’s Newton neighbourhood that is believed to be connected to an ongoing extortion investigation.

Police say frontline officers responded to reports of gunfire near 57 Avenue and 148 Street at approximately 4:40 a.m. on May 20, 2026.

When officers arrived, they found damage to a home and evidence that multiple shots had been fired. The residence was occupied at the time of the incident, but fortunately no injuries were reported.

Investigators say the case is still in its early stages; however, initial evidence suggests the shooting may be extortion related.

The SPS Extortion Response Team (ExRT) has now taken over the investigation, while the Integrated Forensic Identification Services (IFIS) is processing the scene for physical and digital evidence.

Police are asking anyone with information, including CCTV or dashcam footage from the area around the time of the shooting, to contact Surrey Police Service at 604-599-0502 and quote file number 26-49687 (SP). Anonymous tips can also be provided through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
