SURREY, B.C. — With Surrey residents set to vote in the municipal election on October 17 and the provincial election one week later on October 24, former Surrey mayoral candidate Doug McCallum is calling on provincial party leaders to commit to three major Surrey priorities.
McCallum says Surrey should use the two elections to press Victoria for commitments on a full-service Surrey General Hospital in Newton, a Surrey Police helicopter and drone fleet, and SkyTrain extension to Newton.
McCallum said the three priorities should be answered with clear yes-or-no commitments from the BC NDP and Conservative Party of BC before the provincial vote.
For the proposed hospital, McCallum said a future council under his leadership would dedicate 7.2 acres of city-owned land at 6965 King George Boulevard and issue required City permits within 60 days.
He also called for provincial support for a police helicopter and drone fleet, saying the equipment could be operational within 90 days of a new council taking office.
On transit, McCallum is calling for a commitment to extend SkyTrain along King George Boulevard to Newton.
“Victoria does not get to tell Surrey what its priorities are. Surrey is going to tell Victoria its priorities,” McCallum said.
Surrey’s municipal election is scheduled for October 17, followed by the provincial election on October 24.
