Chandigarh – Former Punjab Police DSP Balwinder Sekhon, who was dismissed from service over alleged anti-government remarks on social media, has officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Sekhon’s induction took place in the presence of Vijay Rupani, former Chief Minister of Gujarat and BJP’s Punjab in-charge.
Sekhon had previously contested the 2022 Punjab Vidhan Sabha elections from Ludhiana West as an independent candidate but managed to secure only 453 votes. He also ran in the Lok Sabha elections from Sangrur but failed to make a significant impact.
His dismissal from Punjab Police came during the tenure of then-DGP Dinkar Gupta, following a conflict with former Cabinet Minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu. The government cited disciplinary violations, stating that Sekhon had made “unpleasant remarks” against the administration while still being part of the police force.
With his entry into the BJP, Sekhon aims to revive his political career under the party’s banner in Punjab. His move is seen as part of BJP’s strategy to expand its base in the state ahead of upcoming elections.
