Chandigarh, November 27, 2025: The long-delayed Panjab University Senate elections have officially been set in motion after the Vice-President of India, who also serves as the Chancellor of Panjab University, approved the proposed election schedule. The confirmation came through a formal communication issued by the Vice-President Secretariat to Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Renu Vig.
In the letter dated November 27, 2025, the Secretariat conveyed that the Hon’ble Vice-President had reviewed and approved the poll timeline submitted by the university earlier this month through its correspondence No. DRs1/25/8392 dated November 9, 2025.
According to the notified schedule, elections for key constituencies — including principals, professors, associate professors, assistant professors, and registered graduates — will take place between September 7 and October 4, 2026. Vote counting will be conducted alongside the polling period, from September 9 to October 4, 2026.
The long-awaited approval comes amid intense pressure from various student and faculty groups. The PU Bachao Morcha had led a 25-day agitation demanding immediate clarity on the Senate election process, arguing that administrative delays were affecting governance at the university. Their sustained protests, combined with growing political attention in Punjab and Chandigarh, had turned the issue into a major flashpoint.
With the Centre now formally clearing the election schedule, university stakeholders expect the prolonged unrest on campus to ease. The announcement marks a significant step toward restoring normalcy and reactivating Panjab University’s administrative machinery, which has been operating under uncertainty for months.
