Ottawa, August 28, 2025 – Canada has appointed veteran diplomat Christopher Cooter as its new High Commissioner to India, replacing Cameron MacKay.
Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand made the announcement today, calling the appointment an important step in restoring full diplomatic services between Canada and India.
The move follows a commitment by Prime Ministers Mark Carney and Narendra Modi at the G7 Summit in June to strengthen diplomatic ties and exchange new high commissioners.
Cooter, a career diplomat with 35 years of service, most recently served as Chargé d’affaires to Israel and was previously Canada’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, Mauritius, and Madagascar. He is no stranger to the region, having served as First Secretary at the Canadian High Commission in New Delhi from 1998 to 2000, covering India, Nepal, and Bhutan.
The appointment signals a renewed push to bolster trade, consular, and business services for citizens of both countries.
