Surrey, B.C. — Surrey Mayor has strongly criticized the misuse of Canada’s immigration system after learning that suspects identified by B.C.’s Extortion Task Force are allegedly claiming refugee status to avoid deportation.
In a statement, the Mayor said Surrey has been disproportionately affected by extortion attempts and called for swift justice against those responsible. She expressed concern that criminals are exploiting legal and immigration processes to prolong their stay in Canada, undermining public safety and public confidence.
“Law-abiding Canadians and foreign nationals in our city deserve better than to see our legal and immigration systems abused by criminals,” the Mayor said.
Calling on the federal government to act urgently, the Mayor urged immediate reforms to immigration and deportation laws to better protect communities. She emphasized that individuals who come to Canada as guests and then break the law should be removed from the country without delay.
The Mayor reaffirmed Surrey’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, noting that the city is proud to welcome people from all backgrounds. However, she stressed that residents deserve to feel safe in their homes, businesses, and neighbourhoods, and said Ottawa must do its part to keep communities protected from international criminals.
