Surrey, BC- Surrey Police Service (SPS) has announced that Deputy Chief Constable Todd Matsumoto will serve as Interim Chief Constable following the resignation of Chief Constable Norm Lipinski.
In a statement released after the leadership change was announced by the Surrey Police Board, Matsumoto thanked Lipinski for his leadership over the past five and a half years and recognized his 47 years of service in policing.
“The milestones and accomplishments achieved by SPS are a reflection of his commitment to the Service, the community, and the city,” Matsumoto said.
Matsumoto said he is committed to leading the department while the Surrey Police Board conducts a search for the next chief and will work closely with the Board to maintain progress on key priorities for Surrey.
He emphasized that public safety operations will continue without disruption during the transition, noting that SPS remains focused on tackling extortion, organized crime, gangs, and violence.
Matsumoto also reaffirmed the service’s commitment to recruiting and deploying new and experienced officers while continuing work on what SPS describes as the largest policing transition in Canadian history.
“SPS will continue to deliver exceptional, community-focused public safety to Surrey, as we have since becoming the City’s police service on November 29, 2024,” he said.
The Surrey Police Board has not yet announced a timeline for selecting a permanent Chief Constable.
