Surrey- The Surrey RCMP has identified a suspect in a horrifying attempted murder case where the victim was set on fire in a brazen daylight attack. The incident occurred just after 1 p.m. on August 2, near City Parkway and 102 Avenue.
Police responded to reports of a serious assault and arrived to find the victim, identified as Rahat Rao, a local businessman who operates a currency exchange in the Whalley neighbourhood, suffering from severe burns. According to RCMP, the suspect allegedly doused Rao with an accelerant before setting him on fire.
The suspect has been identified as 33-year-old Kalid Yimer. Authorities have described Yimer as 5’6” tall, with dark hair, brown eyes, and a medium build. Given the severity of the attack, police believe Yimer to be violent and dangerous.
“Given the severity of the incident on August 2, 2024, Kalid Yimer is believed to be violent and dangerous, and police are releasing an enhanced photo to locate him and warn the public,” said Corp. Sarbjit K. Sangha in a release on Friday.
The Surrey RCMP is now seeking the public’s assistance in locating Yimer. They are urging anyone with information on his whereabouts to avoid approaching him and to call 9-1-1 immediately.
