Surrey, BC- With the vibrant festival of Vaisakhi just days away, the Surrey Police Service (SPS) is urging attendees to prioritize safety as they prepare to join one of the largest celebrations of its kind in the world.
The annual Surrey Khalsa Day Vaisakhi Parade is expected to draw tens of thousands of people from across the Lower Mainland and beyond on Saturday, April 18, 2026. In coordination with the City of Surrey and event organizers, SPS has developed a comprehensive public safety plan aligned with provincial guidelines for large gatherings.
Police presence will be significantly increased, with support from multiple Lower Mainland police agencies and integrated units to assist with crowd safety and traffic control throughout the event.
Authorities also highlighted that a Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) will be in effect during the parade, strictly prohibiting the use of drones and other remotely piloted aircraft systems in the area. This measure is aimed at ensuring the safety of both participants and spectators, and any unauthorized drone use will not be permitted.
SPS emphasized that every year, officers respond to incidents involving missing children and elderly individuals during the celebrations due to the large crowds. As a result, families and groups are strongly encouraged to plan ahead and follow key safety measures.
Safety Tips for Attendees:
* Take a group photo before arriving to help identify missing loved ones if needed
* Pre-arrange a meeting spot in case of separation
* Ensure everyone carries identification
* Keep recent photos of children readily available
* Maintain constant visual contact with children
* Report missing persons immediately to nearby officers
* Leave pets at home to avoid distress in crowded environments
SPS says it looks forward to celebrating alongside the community while ensuring a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable Vaisakhi for all.
