Surrey, B.C. – Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke has issued a strong call to action, urging Premier David Eby to introduce immediate tax relief measures to counter the economic fallout from incoming U.S. tariffs.
In a statement released on Feb.2, Mayor Locke demanded that the provincial government:
1. Cut the gas tax to ease financial pressure on businesses and residents.
2. Suspend the Provincial Sales Tax (PST) on B.C.-made goods to encourage local production and consumer spending.
3. Review all provincial relief measures to support industries affected by the tariffs.
“These tariffs will have devastating impacts on families and businesses across Surrey and B.C., and immediate relief is essential,” said Mayor Locke. “A gas tax cut will help alleviate the crushing financial burden on our businesses and residents, ensuring that families can continue to thrive in our community.”
Mayor Locke acknowledged Premier Eby’s recent condemnation of the tariffs calling them a “complete betrayal”and his retaliatory measures, such as suspending select American liquor imports. She also praised his efforts in addressing the softwood lumber dispute but emphasized the need for further action.
“British Columbia is home to some of the highest taxes in Canada, placing a significant burden on our residents,” she stated. “That’s is why this morning, I have written Mr. Eby, urging him to implement tax cuts and a comprehensive relief package, similar to those introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, to support businesses and families affected by the tariffs.”
The introduction of these tariffs is expected to disrupt supply chains, jeopardizing tens of thousands of jobs particularly in manufacturing and value-added sectors. Mayor Locke warned that Surrey, home to the largest border crossings in Western Canada, is particularly exposed.
“Our data shows that over 20% of Surrey businesses have direct trade ties with the United States, representing roughly $2.8 billion in cross-border commerce annually,” she noted.
As a member of the Border Mayors Alliance, Locke stressed that border cities like Surrey would be the first to feel the economic strain. She pledged to work with other B.C. municipalities to promote a ‘Canada First’ initiative, prioritizing Canadian products and businesses to counter the impact of these punitive tariffs.
“I am actively reaching out to key stakeholders in Surrey, including the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce, Surrey Board of Trade, and the BC Trucking Association,” she added.
Locke concluded her statement with a plea for provincial and federal collaboration, warning that the future of B.C.’s economy, businesses, and families is at stake.
“We understand the significant ramifications these tariffs would inflict not just on our businesses and supply chains but on countless families who depend on those jobs for their livelihoods. I look forward to working collaboratively with the provincial and federal governments on a coordinated response that will stabilize our economy and support our communities.”
