Surrey, B.C. – The City of Surrey has officially opened the first Jumpstart Community Soccer Pitch in Western Canada, creating a new space for children, families, and residents to enjoy soccer and recreational play at Guildford Heights Park.
Developed in partnership with Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities, the new facility is part of a national initiative to build 25 community soccer pitches across Canada by 2029. The project is designed to increase access to sport and physical activity while helping remove barriers for youth participation.
Mayor Brenda Locke said Surrey continues to see strong growth in soccer participation and remains committed to expanding quality sports infrastructure across the city. She noted that the new pitch will provide local families with greater opportunities to play, learn, and stay active close to home.
The new turf soccer pitch features perimeter fencing and solar-powered lighting, making it accessible for both daytime and evening use. The facility is available for drop-in play as well as organized community programs, serving everyone from beginner players to local soccer clubs.
To further encourage participation, an Equip Sport Locker supported by Jumpstart has been installed at the park, providing free access to soccer balls for community use.
Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities Chief Operating Officer Stuart McReynolds said the new pitch will offer a safe and welcoming place for children and youth to build confidence, stay active, and connect with their community.
The official opening ceremony featured Mayor Brenda Locke alongside Canadian soccer legend Christine Sinclair, highlighting the importance of accessible community sports facilities for the next generation of athletes.
The new community pitch is now open to the public at Guildford Heights Park.
