SURREY — The City of Surrey has awarded $1.26 million in contracts for road widening work along King George Boulevard as part of preparations for the future Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project.
The work will widen King George Boulevard between 72 Avenue and 76 Avenue by adding a third southbound lane aimed at improving traffic flow and enhancing access to businesses located along the west side of the corridor, including major commercial destinations such as Costco. The improvement will complement the existing third northbound lane already in place on the east side of the roadway.
Mayor Brenda Locke said the investment is a key step toward advancing rapid transit infrastructure in the city while also addressing current traffic congestion concerns.
“Investing in this road work is an important step toward preparing for the Bus Rapid Transit system in Surrey,” Locke said. “The additional southbound lane on King George Boulevard will address current traffic congestion while improving access to local businesses including major destinations like Costco.”
Construction is expected to begin in June and conclude by the end of the summer.
Earlier this month, Surrey council approved moving the King George Boulevard BRT project into the full design phase. The planned rapid transit line will run along a 19-kilometre corridor connecting City Centre to Semiahmoo Town Centre with 12 stations planned along the route.
According to public consultation conducted earlier this year by TransLink, community support for the project remains strong, with 84 per cent of respondents indicating the BRT line would improve transportation options for residents and commuters.
