Surrey, B.C.-The Province, in partnership with Fraser Health Authority, has announced the development of a new BC Builds site in Surrey to provide affordable rental housing for nurses, health-care workers, and their families. The housing initiative, located near Surrey’s second hospital currently under construction, will allow health-care professionals to live closer to their workplaces.

“Delivering homes for the people who provide the services we rely on and drive our economy forward is why we launched BC Builds,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Housing. “Through this initiative, we will be able to build first-of-its-kind housing to help health-care workers and their families find homes they can afford, and help people get the health care they need.”

The new housing development is part of a larger $19-billion investment in affordable housing across the province. Since 2017, over 84,000 homes have been delivered or are underway throughout B.C., with nearly 1,900 of those located in Surrey.

This project aims to address the growing need for health-care workers, ensuring they have access to affordable housing while also improving access to primary care for B.C. residents. The housing initiative is closely tied to the province’s broader Health Human Resources Strategy, which focuses on recruiting, retaining, and training health professionals.

As part of the province’s efforts to increase primary-care access, this housing project plays a critical role in helping health-care professionals stay close to their communities, furthering their ability to provide essential services.
