OTTAWA – The New Democratic Party (NDP) has confirmed they will vote against Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre’s motion, which is seen as a no-confidence challenge to the Liberal government. NDP leader Jagmeet Singh took to ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) to emphasize that his party is focused on stopping Poilievre’s efforts to dismantle key social programs.
“Pierre’s plan is to stop Pharmacare to protect Big Pharma’s profits. To cut dental care, and workers’ pensions to give more to CEOs. Our plan is to stop Poilievre and deliver relief. The future of Canada and the future of the middle class are too important. We’re not going to play Pierre Poilievre’s games,” Singh posted.
In response, Poilievre harshly criticized Singh, accusing him of misleading Canadians. “Jagmeet Singh flat out lied to Canadians when he claimed he was tearing up the carbon tax coalition. He did a big Hollywood-style video to save himself in the Winnipeg by-election. But when he no longer needed people’s votes, he betrayed them again. He chose his pension over the people, and lied to your face. Never trust him again,” Poilievre said.
Bloc Québécois leader Yves-François Blanchet has also stated that his party will not support the Conservative motion, signaling a lack of broad opposition to the government.
The Liberal government, facing its first political test since the expiration of the NDP-Liberal supply and confidence deal, is expected to survive the vote, avoiding an immediate election.
