Langley, BC – In a significant move to address traffic congestion and improve daily commutes in the Fraser Valley, the provincial government has announced $2.65 billion in new funding to upgrade Highway 1 between Mount Lehman Road and Highway 11 in Abbotsford. This investment follows the $2.34 billion allocated last fall for upgrades between 264th Street and Mount Lehman Road, marking a major step in the Fraser Valley Highway 1 Corridor Improvement Program.
The upgrades aim to expand the highway through the Sumas Prairie toward Chilliwack, enhancing transportation for cars, buses, bikes, and pedestrians. Premier David Eby emphasized the project’s importance for the region’s rapidly growing population: “By improving Highway 1, we’ll keep goods moving smoothly and help people get to work and back home faster, so they can spend less time stuck in traffic and more time with their families.”
Improvements include the rebuilding of overpasses at Peardonville Road, Bradner Road, and the CPKC rail overhead to improve safety for commercial vehicles. New interchanges will be constructed at 232nd Street, 264th Street, Mount Lehman Road, and Highway 11, along with high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes and bus-on-shoulder lanes to enhance transit reliability.
Construction on the $2.34 billion section between 264th Street and Mount Lehman Road will begin in 2024, with completion of this phase expected by 2029.
