Vancouver- Harjit S. Sajjan, Member of Parliament for Vancouver South since 2015, has announced that he will not seek re-election in the next federal election. In a Public statement Sajjan expressed gratitude to his community for their unwavering support and reflected on his journey in politics, which was driven by a commitment to amplifying the voices of Vancouver South residents.
During his tenure, Sajjan served in key cabinet positions, including Minister of National Defence, Minister of International Development, and Minister of Emergency Preparedness. He highlighted several achievements, including securing federal funding for housing, improving transit systems, and establishing new facilities such as a seniors’ centre in Sunset.
Sajjan expressed pride in government programs like the Canada Child Care Benefit, the National Dental Care Plan, and the National School Food Program, which aim to support families and reduce poverty across Canada.
Reflecting on the challenges of modern politics, Sajjan lamented the growing polarization and toxicity in the political landscape, calling for greater civility, respect, and constructive dialogue. Despite stepping away from elected office, Sajjan reaffirmed his dedication to the values of the Liberal Party and a vision of a compassionate Canada.
He concluded by thanking Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, his colleagues, campaign teams, and most importantly, his family, for their unwavering support during his public service.
