Surrey: Former Mayor Dough McCallum has criticized Mayor Brenda Locke over her comments regarding the Pattullo Bridge in a local radio program.
In a statement issued by Safe Surrey Coalition, the Former Mayor said the criticism of the provincial government over a one-year delay in the project is coming from a Mayor who has “failed” to address Surrey’s own road infrastructure needs, focusing her energies on an issue outside her jurisdiction.
“Building the Pattullo Bridge is under provincial control, yet Mayor Locke points fingers while ignoring her failure to invest in Surrey’s road infrastructure to ease traffic congestion in her own city, where almost half the roads are in poor or critical condition,” McCallum said.
He said one of her key platform promises was to stop the construction of the new 84th Avenue connector, a project that has now eased traffic congestion and saved lives, and instead, she has failed to deliver on this and other major promises.
“Brenda Locke’s hypocrisy knows no bounds. She criticizes the provincial government while neglecting her responsibilities as mayor. Her mismanagement of Surrey’s finances would put even the most incompetent person to shame. Surrey residents deserve better than this kind of incompetent and irresponsible leadership,” McCallum said.
McCallum’s party Safe Surrey Coalition demanded that Mayor Brenda Locke stop “blaming” others and start addressing the real issues being faced by Surrey residents.
“It is time for her to prioritize road infrastructure and invest in projects that will benefit the community and commuters. Mayor Locke’s failure to deliver on her promises and her blatant hypocrisy are unacceptable,” McCallum said.
