Surrey,BC- Surrey North MLA Mandeep Dhaliwal is bringing forward a motion in the B.C. Legislature seeking recognition of the 1984 anti-Sikh violence in India as a genocide.
The motion, listed in the Legislature’s Notice of Motions for Thursday, May 21, calls on the House to honour the memory of those killed and acknowledge the survivors and families whose lives were forever impacted by the events of 1984.
It also highlights the need for education, remembrance and continued awareness to combat anti-Sikh hate, religious persecution, genocide denial and targeted violence.
In the motion, Dhaliwal states that the violence and crimes committed against Sikhs across India in 1984 should be recognized as genocide.
The proposal reflects ongoing efforts within Sikh communities in British Columbia and across Canada to preserve the memory of the victims and promote greater public understanding of the events surrounding 1984.
