BELLA COOLA, B.C. – A terrifying grizzly bear attack on a school outing has left 11 people injured, including two critically, prompting an intense search for the animal and a community-wide safety alert.
The incident occurred Thursday afternoon along a walking trail in Bella Coola, a remote community roughly 700 km northwest of Vancouver. A group from Acwsalcta School — operated by the Nuxalk Nation — was on a field trip when the grizzly suddenly attacked.
According to witness accounts, a male teacher suffered the most severe injuries while trying to shield students. Some children were inadvertently exposed to bear spray as adults attempted to repel the animal.
British Columbia Emergency Health Services confirmed that two people sustained critical injuries, two others were seriously hurt, and seven more were treated on-site for minor injuries.
In an urgent message posted on Facebook, Nuxalk Nation officials warned residents to remain indoors and stay off the highway as armed officers work to locate the bear. “Officers are armed. Remain indoors and off the highway,” the Nation stated, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.
The Nation also acknowledged the emotional toll of the incident, saying, “It’s hard to know what to say during this very difficult time. We are so grateful for our team and our students.”
Acwsalcta School has been temporarily closed, and counselling services are being offered to students, staff, and families as the community grapples with the aftermath of the rare but devastating attack.
Officials continue to search the area as residents await further updates.
