Vancouver-Former British Columbia Premier Christy Clark announced today that she will not enter the race for leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada, citing time constraints and a desire to improve her French proficiency.
In a statement, Clark expressed gratitude for the widespread grassroots support she received from volunteers and organizers across the country. “I want to thank the hundreds of volunteers across Canada who’ve pledged their support for me over this past week,” she said. “We’ve put together an amazing team on very short notice.”
Clark highlighted critical national issues, including confronting U.S. trade threats, fighting for a united Canada, and reigniting the economy. She also underscored the importance of encouraging women and Western Canadians to step forward in national leadership.
Despite the support, Clark emphasized the challenges of running an effective campaign within the limited timeline caused by the Prime Minister’s resignation. “There is simply not enough time to mount a successful campaign and for me to effectively connect with Francophone Canadians in their language,” she explained.
Clark called for the Liberal Party to embrace renewal and growth, urging it to become a “big tent Party” once again—one focused on jobs, workers, investment, and growth. She also criticized Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre for what she described as divisive politics, saying, “We don’t need Governor Poilievre. We need the Liberal Party at the top of its game.”
While she will not be running for leadership, Clark pledged to remain active in supporting Liberal candidates and advancing the party’s vision. “I won’t stop fighting,” she concluded.
Clark’s decision leaves the Liberal Party leadership race wide open as the search continues for a new leader to guide the party into the next federal election.
