Paris: 17-year-old Canadian phenom Summer McIntosh won the first Olympic gold medal of her career on Monday night in the grueling women’s 400-meter individual medley, touching the wall in 4:27.71.

She is the world record-holder and two-time world champion in the event and was considered the heavy favorite in the 400 IM coming into the Paris Olympics.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also congratulated Summer McIntosh on winning her first gold medal. Taking to social media, the Prime Minister wrote, “A star on the rise. Summer McIntosh takes home the Gold in the 400m IM final — her second time on the podium already. Wow. #Paris2024 🇨🇦 🥇 ”
