Surrey, BC – At its upcoming Regular Council Meeting on Monday, Surrey City Council will review $17.3 million in proposed contracts for road improvement and expansion projects across the city, including the first phase of the highly anticipated 132 Street Road Widening Project. These investments aim to address the increasing demands of Surrey’s transportation network, ensuring enhanced road safety and improved traffic flow for both drivers and pedestrians.
Mayor Brenda Locke emphasized the importance of these projects in preparing for Surrey’s future. “Investing in the widening of Newton’s 132 Street corridor and upgrades to our existing road network is vital as we prepare to accommodate Surrey’s growing population, which is projected to reach one million people in the next two decades,” said Locke. “These improvements are not just about improving traffic flow; they are essential for enhancing safety, connectivity, and overall quality of life for our residents. These investments are part of the $300 million that Council has approved to enhance and upgrade our road network over four years to lay the groundwork for a more efficient and accessible transportation system.”
Councillor Harry Bains, Chair of the Focus Newton Task Force, highlighted the benefits of the planned improvements for Newton. “Through the Focus Newton Task Force, we’ve listened to our community and recognized the urgent need for enhanced transportation infrastructure,” said Bains. “The widening of 132 Street and other vital upgrades will not only improve traffic flow but also ensure safer pathways for our pedestrians and cyclists. Together, we’re building a better, more connected future for our residents.”
Key Projects in the Proposed Contracts
The $17.3 million proposal includes several critical projects aimed at upgrading Surrey’s road network:
1.132 Street Road Widening Project: A $9.2 million contract is proposed to widen 132 Street from 72 Avenue to 76 Avenue, expanding the corridor from two lanes to four. This project will improve traffic flow, enhance safety, and create better facilities for walking and cycling. As one of the city’s busiest corridors, this marks the first phase of a multi-phase initiative to address congestion and support growth in Newton. Future phases will extend the widening to 84 Avenue.
2.Annual Paving and Minor Road Restoration: A $2.9 million contract is proposed for annual paving and minor road restoration, addressing repairs associated with in-house water and sanitary utility construction. This will ensure prompt road restoration to optimal condition.
3.Major Road Network Paving: A $5.2 million contract is planned for repaving 24 lane-kilometers of major roadways, improving safety and usability. Key areas include:
• 104 Avenue: King George Blvd to Whalley Blvd
• Scott Road: 100 Avenue to 101A Avenue
• King George Blvd: Various intersections and sections
• 96 Avenue, 88 Avenue, 120 Street, and 152 Street segments
