Chandigarh- The Punjab government has officially sanctioned the prosecution of Gurmeet Ram Rahim,the leader of Dera Sacha Sauda, in connection with three significant sacrilege cases from 2015. These incidents, involving the desecration of religious texts, led to widespread protests from the Sikh community and violent clashes with police, resulting in the tragic deaths of two demonstrators during police firing.
This landmark decision follows closely on the heels of a recent Supreme Court ruling, which lifted a stay imposed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The court’s stay had effectively stalled the trial against Ram Rahim for years. The Supreme Court’s order came in response to a petition from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, which sought to expedite the legal proceedings.
