Surrey, BC – Prime Minister Mark Carney announced new federal measures aimed at detecting, disrupting, and preventing extortion activities following a meeting with law enforcement agencies in Surrey.
“We’re bringing in new measures to detect, disrupt, and prevent extortion,” said Prime Minister Carney.
“By coordinating with law enforcement, financial institutions, and governments, we’ll improve how intelligence is shared and deploy financial intelligence experts to support police in the hardest hit areas,” he added.
The announcement comes amid growing concerns over extortion-related incidents impacting communities across British Columbia. The federal government says the new approach will strengthen collaboration between police agencies and financial intelligence units to better identify and target organized criminal networks involved in extortion.
Officials emphasized that enhancing intelligence-sharing and deploying specialized financial experts will help law enforcement track illicit financial flows and support investigations in regions most affected by these crimes.
