OTTAWA – Liberal leadership candidate Chrystia Freeland is urging Ottawa to hit back hard against U.S. tariffs by targeting Tesla vehicles and American alcohol in a retaliatory trade package.
In an interview with The Canadian Press, Freeland proposed a 100% tariff on all U.S. wine, beer, and spirits, as well as all Tesla vehicles, arguing that Canada must send a clear message: an attack on Canadian trade will not be cost-free for Trump’s allies.
“We need to be very targeted, surgical, and precise,” Freeland said. “We need to look through and say who is supporting Trump and how can we make them pay a price for a tariff attack on Canada.”
Her comments come as U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed Thursday that he still intends to impose a 25% tariff on all Canadian and Mexican imports starting Saturday.
Freeland emphasized that Canada must retaliate strategically, ensuring that Trump’s s closest supporters feel the economic pain of their leaders trade policies.
