SURREY, B.C. — Construction is officially underway on the new Newton Community Centre, one of the largest capital investments in the City of Surrey’s history.

Crews are currently removing decommissioned infrastructure, grading the site and conducting additional geotechnical testing as work progresses on the project.

“This project is a gamechanger for Newton,” Mayor Brenda Locke said, describing the facility as a major community hub that will bring recreation, culture and library services together under one roof.

The 175,000-square-foot community centre will feature a 50-metre lap pool, leisure pool, hot tub and sauna, along with two gymnasiums, a fitness centre, multi-purpose and arts spaces, and child-care areas.

The project will also include a new 40,000-square-foot library, which will be more than twice the size of the existing Newton branch.

Construction follows the completion of a new road serving the future community centre. The road provides a direct route from King George Boulevard for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers and is expected to open in the coming weeks.

Located on the east side of King George Boulevard next to the Newton Seniors Centre, the $310.6-million project is part of Surrey’s long-term plan to revitalize the Newton town centre.

The Newton Community Centre is expected to open in spring 2030.
