Ottawa- Canadian immigration authorities are reminding the public that marriage to a Canadian citizen or permanent resident is not a guaranteed pathway to living in Canada and can lead to serious legal consequences if done for immigration purposes only.
Officials urge people to think carefully before marrying or sponsoring someone, especially if the relationship developed very quickly, the person pushes for a fast marriage, has a history of multiple marriages or common-law relationships, or has shared limited information about their background or family.
Immigration officers are specially trained to assess the authenticity of relationships. Applications are carefully reviewed through document verification, background checks, and interviews with both sponsors and applicants to identify false marriages and non-genuine common-law or conjugal relationships.
Authorities stress that entering into a relationship of convenience for immigration reasons is a criminal offence. Canadian citizens and permanent residents involved in marriage fraud may face charges, penalties, and long-term consequences under immigration and criminal law.
