February 18, 2026 – Ottawa – The federal government says it is taking steps to return immigration to sustainable levels while continuing to strengthen Canada’s economy through targeted recruitment of highly skilled workers.
Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced the 2026 categories under the Express Entry system, aimed at addressing critical labour gaps in key sectors. The changes are part of Canada’s broader International Talent Attraction Strategy as global competition for skilled workers intensifies.
Among the new additions is a category for foreign medical doctors with Canadian work experience. Canada will also introduce new categories for researchers and senior managers with Canadian work experience, candidates in transport occupations such as pilots, aircraft mechanics and inspectors, and highly skilled foreign military applicants recruited by the Canadian Armed Forces in specialized roles including military doctors, nurses and pilots.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada will continue to hold invitation rounds for candidates with strong French-language skills, as well as those with work experience in priority sectors established in 2025. These include health care and social services professions such as nurse practitioners, dentists, pharmacists, psychologists and chiropractors, along with skilled trades including carpenters, plumbers and machinists.
“Canada’s future depends on a workforce ready to meet the challenges of a changing economy,” said Minister Diab. “By refining Express Entry to focus on the skills our communities truly need, we are strengthening our labour market, supporting provincial priorities and ensuring newcomers can contribute from day one.”
